He or she must have a four year degree from an accredited college or university and pass the examination administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The CPA license is valid in all 50 states and territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands. CPAs also need to pass a test given by the state board of accountancy, which can be taken at any professional association of CPAs or at the state library where the CPAs live.

Although CPAs are required by law to disclose their profession to clients, some states allow CPAs to work without disclosing their designation to clients. Other states do not allow CPAs to work as a principal or partner in any company that offers accounting or bookkeeping services. In some cases, CPAs are required to disclose their designation when asked for advice from a client.
